8 March
Monday
INTERNATIONAL WOMENS' DAY
The history of International Women's Day is a history of taking action. The event originated in 1908 when women garment makers in New York demonstrated to demand better working conditions. They worked in appalling conditions, earned half of men's wages, died prematurely from poor health and didn't have the right to vote.
In 1910 an international conference of women resolved that each year a day should be set aside to press for women's demands.
Each year around the world, International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. Hundreds of events occur not just on this day but throughout March to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women.

'Women and the workplace: the myths that hamper
Guest Speaker: Catherine Fox
Venue: Blake Dawson, Level 36 Grosvenor Place, 225 George Street, Sydney
We invite you to join us for networking cocktails hosted by Blake Dawson at 5.30 for 6pm presentation by award-winning journalist, author and AFR BOSS Deputy Editor, Catherine Fox, as she discusses ‘Women and the Workplace: the myths that hamper”.
All these years after the introduction of sex discrimination legislation we still find many Australian women marginalised and on lower pay than their males colleagues. There are a number of corrosive stereotypes and assumptions that prevent women's progress in the workplace including those in the domestic and caring realms. These have a serious impact on women’s careers - whether they have children or not. If these stereotypes are to be addressed we need to unpick the main myths and analyse the latest gender research to look more closely at what happens in organisations, government policy and in our homes. There is no simple solution but change on all fronts is critical if we are to see a real shift in the next generation of leaders in Australian business, government and the professions. $35 members, $45 non-members includes refreshments.
