Mentoring & Advancing Women in Law Programs

The origins of “Mentoring” come from the ancient Greeks.
When Odysseys, King of Ithaca, went to fight the Trojan War, he entrusted the care of his son, Telemachus, to his friend, Mentor. In time, the word Mentor became synonymous with a trusted friend, teacher or wise person.

WLANSW continues to develop initiatives in programs and events as noted below. Please refer to our Events section for updated details.

Our Biennial Awards will culminate with an annual Awards & Fundraising Dinner commencing 2007 and provide an opportunity and structure to recognise the achievements of women in law and a vehicle to fund our “Advancing Women in Law Programs”:

• Annual free seminars “Law as a Career” & “Coming to the Bar” usually held during Law Week

• Bi-annual Female Bar Readers Welcome & Networking lunches and WLANSW  Female Bar Reader’s Room at Frederick Jordan Chambers. Women Lawyers has for over 30 years leased a room in Frederick Jordan Chambers for the purpose of providing reading accommodation for female barristers. At the time of its inception, female barristers were experiencing discrimination in their search for professional accommodation. That difficulty having been dramatically reduced,  a 'wake' was held on 17 August 2007 on termination of the lease and to celebrate its irrelevance.

• Veronica Pike Awards Fund. This prize was established in 1988 by WLANSW in recognition of the career of Veronica Pike, a pioneering women lawyer and founding member of our Association (admitted in 1940). The prize is awarded annually to a final year female student at UTS who obtains the highest mark in the subject Law of Evidence. The prize has a cash value of $100 and is usually presented at the UTS awards night by one of our committee members. Further info is available at: http://www.uts.edu.au/div/publications/law/faculty/prizes.html The annual Awards & Fundraising Dinner will revive the Fund and provide additional awards and support for students of law.

• Support and assistance with various Law Student Mentoring Programs.

• ‘Golden Girls’ Annual Lunch will facilitate regular gatherings and enable members and colleagues to meet socially with our pioneering women of law and share their experiences

• A range of seminars and events including distinguished members of the judiciary, expert practitioners, speakers and trainers providing a variety of networking and development opportunities to enhance your personal and professional advancement.

• Involvement of students, barristers, solicitors and practitioners in Committees and subcommittees of the WLANSW, enabling active participation in matters affecting the position of women in the practice of law.
