Dear Members & Colleagues In the words of Justice Mary Gaudron at our Female Bar Reader's Room Wake hosted by Frederick Jordan Chambers last Friday, "What a great week!" Last week marked the celebrated end of the Female Bar Reader's Room due to the progress made over the past 35 years since its inception. It seems happy coincidence that this followed the highly celebrated appointment of the Honourable Justice Susan Keifel as a second woman on the current High Court of Australia. It is the first time in the history of the High Court that two women have served on the High Court bench at the same time, and of course only the third time in the history of the High Court that a woman has been appointed. Place this good news in the context of the recent appointment of Elizabeth Broderick, former Partner, Board Member, and head of the IT Law section at Blake Dawson Waldron, as the Federal Sex Discrimination Commissioner replacing Pru Goward, and it certainly seems significant and exciting times for women lawyers indeed. We warmly congratulate Justice Keifel and Ms Broderick on their new appointments, and very much look forward to their work to come. We welcome Holding Redlich and American Express as Corporate Member supporters since our last enews. For further details on member benefits and options please refer to the attached Membership Form, and contact: I look forward to seeing you at our Networking Drinks next Thursday, 30th August as detailed below.
