2009 Gender Appearance Survey Results and WLA NSW & ANU Research Project
The results of the Law Council of Australia's 2009 Gender Appearance Survey show that the overwhelming majority of fees earned for litigation work in NSW continue to line the pockets of men, and point to the need for research, sponsorship and funding towards identifying and monitoring the progression of women in the legal profession and the factors that affect their choices in the law as a career. WLA NSW is partnering with the Australian National University (ANU) in implementing a survey of final year law students which will track the progress and career decisions of law graduates in New South Wales and the ACT.
Anyone who is interested in contributing sponsorship and funding towards the WLA NSW and ANU survey of final year law students, including sponsorship and funding that will support the survey in being implemented nationally, should contact Lee-May Saw, Immediate Past President and Chair of Research & Policy for WLA NSW, at lmsaw@idx.com.au or on 0417 693 239.

Flexible Working Arrangements Model Proposal
A joint project of the Australian Legal Practice Management Association (ALPMA) and WLANSW, launched 17 November 2009. Please click here to download the Model Proposal

This model proposal is for lawyers seeking to make the business case to their employers for a flexible working arrangement. It aims to be general enough to enable employees to adapt it to meet their particular circumstances but particular enough to ensure that all costs and benefits (actual and potential) are addressed in a thorough and systematic fashion.
We hope that the model proposal will also serve as a resource for HR managers and employers who may not have policies in place to guide them on how to respond to such requests. It may also help them to adopt a uniform approach and reduce the transaction costs of renegotiating such arrangements. Finally, we hope that it will help to encourage best practice in this area.
